Why I left my PhD

Why I left my PhD

I left my PhD after a year. I loved my topic but I didn't want to just read about it, I wanted to live it. I didn't feel the need to prove my knowledge and experience to others and I didn't need to be recognised as a master of my field. The passion was certainly there (in bucketloads), and I did want to promote the idea to others. But that is not a PhD. Talking my thoughts … [Read more...] about Why I left my PhD

Creative decluttering

Creative decluttering

Decluttering should fundamentally be a creative process, rather than a chore, a problem or a responsibility. It is a positive, happy, artistic opportunity to rework your space and use it in the way that works best for you and your family. There is no right or wrong way of decluttering. We do not need to reduce to 'x' amount of stuff or have a show home to impress our friends. … [Read more...] about Creative decluttering

Counting the cost of Christmas

Counting the cost of Christmas

Guest post by Jacqueline Fenner I want to make it clear, I am not ungrateful. I am extremely grateful for all the people who think of my children with love, and I understand they enjoy expressing this through gift giving. In the past few months, however, I’ve had a massive awakening. We’ve all seen the recent news coverage regarding impending environmental catastrophe, … [Read more...] about Counting the cost of Christmas

How to thrive as a one income family

How to thrive as a one income family

We have made a choice to live on one income in order to home educate our son. It could have been that we set things up more equally, with us both spending some time working and some time with our child. And maybe that would have been better in some respects. But my partner has a career he loves and has worked hard at, and after taking maternity leave, I didn't feel ready to … [Read more...] about How to thrive as a one income family

Worldschool from home: Why and how?

Worldschool from home: Why and how?

In a previous post, I explained my wanderlust dilemma. I love to travel, but my circumstances mean I cannot do this as much as I would like. I am a home educator and as such I am 'economically unviable'. My partner has a job he loves at our local hospital and his income pays for our way of life. I am thoroughly attracted to the idea of worldschooling and I believe it … [Read more...] about Worldschool from home: Why and how?

What is One Planet Parent?

We provide inspiration for simple living, decluttering, saving money, going vegan, unschooling and learning through travel for parents who want to do things differently.

We see the role of the parent as not just one of raising children, but creating a generational shift in perspective and providing the skills, knowledge and motivation for young people to live well with less, create a connection to nature and other people, and to care deeply about the Earth. Let’s bring up a generation of critical thinkers, problem solvers, outdoor lovers, frugal living experts and environmental activists, not passive consumers and followers of fashion. We only have one planet, and as parents we have an opportunity to create change and mitigate the mistakes of the past. Let’s lead by example.
